For long-time Silicon Valley entrepreneur Marc Willard, the debut of Transcend Insights in March 2015 represents the culmination of a 20-year track record of innovation in solving complex tech industry challenges. He most recently turned his attention to population health management (PHM), leveraging his extensive background in strategic business planning, customer driven research, product development, sales and marketing to launch Transcend Insights. The company creates true community-wide interoperability and analytics through cutting-edge, yet simple-to-use technology to help patients, physicians and healthcare systems nationwide enhance healthcare and improve outcomes.
Marc’s entrepreneurial vision has made an impact across tech industries. Using his connections in the venture community to secure venture capital, private equity and strategic investments, Marc has the vision and expertise to take businesses from startup to successful exits – selling two of his startups to public companies. In 1989, he founded ColourPass Corporation, a worldwide leader in the digital imaging market, and sold it to Raster Graphics Inc. in 1997. In 2003, he founded Certify Data Systems, a pioneer in health information exchange technology, while working as an Entrepreneur in Residence at Ricoh Innovations. He sold Certify to Humana in November 2012.
Marc’s latest venture, Transcend Insights, exemplifies his innovative approach to simplifying population health. After he sold Certify to Humana, he merged it with two other Humana tech companies: Anvita Health, an industry-leading healthcare analytics company, and nliven systems, an intuitive health care software firm. Through Transcend Insights, a wholly owned subsidiary of Humana, Marc has achieved his vision of combining community-wide interoperability with real-time healthcare analytics and intuitive care tools to enhance the patient experience and reduce costs.
One of Marc’s passions is sharing his engineering and technical expertise, as well as his venture/investment community connections, with other entrepreneurs seeking to navigate the challenges of starting tech companies in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
Thomas J. Van Gilder, MD, JD, MPH, chief medical officer and vice president of informatics and analytics, is a board-certified physician in internal medicine, general preventive medicine and public health. Prior to joining Transcend Insights, he held several positions at Humana including a position as the national medical director for wellness.
Before Humana, Dr. Van Gilder served as the medical director for quality initiatives and as a practicing primary care physician for QuadMed, an organization that directs on-site medical facilities for a number of companies. He also served over nine years in the U.S. Public Health Service at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In addition, Dr. Van Gilder is an attorney specializing in intellectual property. He has spoken nationally and internationally on a variety of law and public health topics, including healthcare related topics such as; primary care transformation, value-based benefit design and on-site clinical care.
Dr. Van Gilder obtained a master’s degree in public health from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Kristin Russel is a successful entrepreneur and award-winning marketing professional with proven leadership experience in the healthcare information technology (HCIT) industry.
Having led marketing and sales teams at both Cerner and Omnicell, Russel has a deep understanding of the HCIT space. Before working at Transcend Insights, Russel led North American marketing for Omnicell, overseeing the complete product portfolio for the medication and automation solutions vendor. Russel’s first venture into healthcare was with Cerner, where she drove client experience initiatives and supported Cerner’s foray into physician practices.
Before working in the HCIT industry, Russel founded Anachron and secured financing to start the global online banking solution that was ultimately sold to ING bank.
Russel uses her MBA in international finance from France and her master’s degree in public administration from Carleton University in Canada to support the strategic endeavors of the organizations she leads.
Jeff Hawkins has more than 17 years of experience in healthcare technology, building large information systems in the payer domain, as well as engineering software products focused on predictive clinical analytics for payers and providers.
In 2013, Hawkins joined Anvita Health (now Transcend Insights) as the vice president of engineering. Before that, Hawkins had multiple roles leading strategic technology initiatives at Humana. He led teams across diverse areas of the organization, including enterprise website systems, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), eligibility and enrollment, pharmacy benefit management integration and clinical programs.
Hawkins received a bachelor’s of science degree in Management Information Systems (MIS) from Western Kentucky University and a master’s of science in MIS from the University of Arizona.
John Reed is a healthcare and insurance industry technology veteran with a highly accomplished track record of crafting simple-to-use products from complex technology. Reed’s teams have designed medical device- and software-based clinical examination systems for surgeons and property and casualty risk assessment systems for global insurance organizations. These medical applications were eventually acquired by Sun Microsystems research labs.
Reed’s executive experience includes serving as the senior vice president of software operations at Symyx Technologies, senior vice president of product development at Risk Management Solutions Inc., and director of product development at Greenleaf Medical Systems. Reed has assembled and managed large, diverse product teams whose efforts resulted in a significant number of innovative, market-leading applications.
Reed earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science and an MBA from the University of Michigan. He also earned a master’s degree in medical informatics from Stanford University Medical School.
Daniel Skempton brings more than 15 years of client services leadership experience to the company. Skempton joined Certify Data Systems (now Transcend Insights), where he was responsible for a broad span of post-sale, client-facing groups, including product implementation, client project management, product support and customer success.
Before joining Certify Data Systems, Skempton was a director of global consulting services at Software AG, where he managed a team of delivery managers and consultants and was responsible for the sale and oversight of consulting services engagements across the Northeastern United States and Canada. Skempton has also served in various client services leadership positions for TIBCO Software and Oracle Corporation.
Skempton obtained his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and electronics and a master’s degree in product design and management, both from the University of Liverpool. Skempton also has a master’s degree in supply chain management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
